PEOPLE ARE LOOKING - THERE IS HELP AGAINST DRUGS

As the controversy rages in the media, not enough treatment for Ice (crystal methamphetamine) and whether kids should be labeled with ADHD and drugged in school because they can't sit still in class, still others know they don't want drugs and are asking for help. Hope exists with an effective drug salvage campaign called Drug Free Ambassadors.

The campaign was started by the Church of Scientology 14 years ago but has grown and stepped into a higher sphere of operation over the years and operates now as Drug Free Ambassadors Australia Incorporated. Volunteers go to wherever youth go, parties and raves, to the fairs and festivals, to the streets or the beaches and talk one on one giving the Truth about Drugs.

Volunteers were in Chatswood recently when four youth came to the stall. One young man said that presdiption drugs are dangerious as well. One girl still stood there, and asked why people take drugs. Ambassadors President Peter Mousiol responded "it could be just boredem or problems or friends tell them it is a good thing to do and we give out these brochures to tell young people about the harmful effects of drugs so they don't even need to start." She was about 16 and said she was on Crack and LSD for about 2 years and wanted to come off but didn't know how. She confessed it was in fact because of boredom that she took the drugs pointed out it is just easy to get them. Peter referred her to Narconon a drug free withdrawl program and and she took the Crack and LSD brochures. Peter said about it, "it's a sad story; beautiful person, looks fine on the outside but behind the curtains a lost soul looking for hope and a solution."

Spokesperson Carly Crutchfield started up www.myspace.com/drugsalvage on the Net and put downloadable anti-drug booklets and is getting incredible feedback on this. One person said "I admire what you are doing. I'm glad I found your page because I think I could use your and your affiliate's help and support with my own drug problems but more to the point some of my closest friends. Keep up the fight. I hope you continue to inspire others to change. I can't believe that I'm crying as I'm writing this due to the overwhelming impact your page has just had on me. I wish I could be stronger but am forever doubting myself. Hopefully I can use this moment as a reference point in my life and try to change for the future."

The Ambassadors are looking for sponsors and working on getting booklets stocked in shops nationwide and printed and distributed everywhere. There are also projects to upgrade and increase the drug education workshops in all areas and train people locally for this, plus getting contemporary audio-visual aids for this, as well as straight onto the internet as educational entertainment.

RISE IN ADHD DRUG PRESCRIPTION MEANS MORE FOR
SALE ON THE STREETS

While a fierce debate rages over the dramatic rise in prescriptions for "ADHD" with children as young as 4, another side to the whole drugging of children issue has been experienced by 25-year-old anti-drug campaigner Carly Crutchfield who speaks to youth on the streets and at dance parties and raves about the effects of drugs.

"Ritalin is the new 'poor man's cocaine' so to speak - we are hearing stories of kids who have been prescribed these drugs, selling them to their friends and crushing and snorting the powder. Ritalin and its generic sister Dexamphetamine are easy to get and are prescribed at the drop of a hat. Kids don't need to access illegal drugs to get high and sell it to their friends - they are doing it with 'legal' prescription drugs, which are in the same class as amphetamines and speed. There has been a 10x increase in prescriptions from 1993 to 2003, now reaching 250,000 prescriptions a year throughout Australia. Are we creating a drugged out, off their face future generation of Australians?" demands Ms Crutchfield.

One Australian reported, "its surprisingly easy to get Dexamphetamines by pretending you have ADD especially if someone who has been through the interview process coaches you with the right things to say."

Why would people cheat to get prescribed a 'ADHD drug'? To illustrate, in 2000, the U.S.Drug Enforcement Agency revealed the results of studies on both animals and humans who were given cocaine and Ritalin. The test subjects could not tell the difference. The Drug Enforcement Administration concluded that, “They produce effects that are nearly identical.” And the statistics show it is used in the street for the same reason all drugs are. 17 percent of serious young offenders currently use heroin, cocaine/crack, street methadone, and morphine as well as illicit use of dexamphetamines and benzodiazepines. And 7 percent of all 14 year olds have tried amphetamines or speed; this figure includes illicit use of Ritalin or dexamphetamines.

"There are so many tragedies that are hidden because of the idea that these drugs are a cure for a disease. The problem is, they are addressing symptoms and child behaviour that some people disagree with or have no other solution for. Time and time again we see stories on TV of solutions existing, but these don't get the government funding, like the drug subsidies do. There's no doubt ampetamines and speed-like substances help you focus. Ask anyone who has taken speed at a rave party," says Cyrus Brooks, Public Officer of the Drug Free Ambassadors, an anti-drug educational charity started by the Church of Scientology.

"Courtney Love, widow of rock legend Kurt Cobain told media they were both prescribed Ritalin when young and also said, “When you’re a kid and you get this drug that makes you feel that [euphoric] feeling, where else are you going to turn when you’re an adult?” says Ms Crutchfield. "Now adults are turning up at the doctor saying they are disorganised, forget things and are distracted and are able in 5-10 minutes to get a legal prescription for an amphethamine to make them 'feel better'. How does that make sense, when if they did that on the street or at a rave, they would be criminally charged for using and drugs. The difference is who is making the profit from the drug sale."

Then there is the story of Matthew, a teenager who died suddenly in March 2000. Medical examiners found that the youth’s heart was 14% larger than a full grown man's heart and although he had no history of heart problems, the autopsy revealed clear signs of small vessel damage. His death certificate reads: “Death caused from Long-Term Use of methylphenidate (Ritalin).”

14 November 2006 Every day we are reading stories about ICE (a pure form of crystal methamphetamine). From drug testing on the road to the work place. A positive note re media stories on drug education needed at the work place, while another quote from a former user read "If you use ice, you'll either end up in a mental institution, or in jail, or dead." The heart of any drug prevention campaign will be education, and to that effect the Church of Scientology launched a huge campaign at it's 22nd Anniversary of the International Assocation of Scientologists. The Truth about Drugs brochures and 10 new anti-drug booklets, to be gotten out at a grassroots level were core elements of the campaign. Very popular with the kids, they have already gotten praise from one Australian city council member who told the Church they "saved 3 lives already." The subjects cover Crystal Meth (ICE), Marijuana (top drug in Australia after alcohol), Ecstasy, Heroin, Cocaine, LSD, Crack, abuse of Painkillers or Ritalin, even inhalants like petrol sniffing. Dear Editor, I was happy to read that the government is going to support broad education on the dangerous effects of ICE (a purer form of methamphetamines also called Crystal Meth, Glass, etc). Working with the Drug Free Ambassadors, started by the Church of Scientology, for many years now, I've seen the effects these drugs have in the community and on individuals. Speed and its purer forms, base and Ice, have serious short and long term effects. Yet I saw one website give weak advice on it, saying that you don't know what is in the stuff you are buying, so best to try a little first. Sheesh! Meth can cause depression, psychosis, brian damage similar to stroke and epilepsy, hallucinations and violence, as has been reported by hospitals and police. Do people know you get a rush, high, then a binge, where you want more, tweaking, where meth doesn't give you any more high--but it can cause you to feel like bugs are crawling under your skin, then a terrible crash and hangover and finally withdrawl which brings on a bad depression amongst other things. Let's be real. People need to know the truth of this terrible drug. My best wishes goes out to those trying to get off, or helping others about this. A drug free life isn't just a trite phrase. ANTI-DRUG INITIATIVE RECEIVES CHARITY STATUS

The Church of Scientology's 13 year old anti-drug initiative, the Drug Free Ambassadors, has just been formally recognized by the Federal Treasury and the Department of Family and Community Services as a charity and fully tax deductible, having been put on the register of Harm Prevention Charities.

The group have been holding events around the city preventing such harm that drugs do. For example at Bexley on Saturday, a young man - James came to the group, very complimentary of the anti-drug program and told his story. He started experimenting with marijuana when he was 14. A few years later he tried heroin. When he couldn't afford to keep up this drug habit he started stealing to pay for it. He ended up in prison and was condemned for 10 years. Whilst he was in jail he was also on the methadone program. He said it wrecked his life and that he would never do drugs again. After seeing us he also wanted to be a volunteer to help others.

The Drug Free Ambassadors is a drug education and prevention program aimed at teens and pre-teens, showing them not only the pitfalls of drugs, but the benefits of a drug-free life. The volunteers go to streets, fairs, malls, schools and wherever the youth congregate to pass on the message and ask them to take a seven point pledge. They follow humanitarian and researcher, L. Ron Hubbard's message where he said, "Save the child,and you save the nation."

There were other great responses there: A mother said that her daughter had bad headaches all the time and continuously took pain killers and she was hoping that her daughter would seek alternative means because she felt that these pills were not good for her. Shop owners said this is a very good thing for the Community and brought family and customers to sign the pledge while we was there. A group of the local girl scouts signed the Pledge and said " theres no way we'll be getting into street drugs".

The Ambassadors are also releasing new booklets to celebrate the new federal status including ones on heroin, marijuana, cocaine, LSD, speed/methamphetamines, ecstasy, crack, kiddie cocaine (ritalin) and painkillers. They are very popular and will get the truth out there.

2. Showing my friends that a drug-free life is more fun.

Bexley Anti-Drug Ambassadors make a difference

Saturday over 100 Bexley-siders signed the drug-free pledge promoted by an anti-drug group, called DRUG FREE AMBASSADORS.

The group targets youth and young adults answering questions and helping them make positive choices about living a drug free life.

One could say it was just on time as the very next day the NSW police seized almost 3 kg of heroin with a potential street value of $3.5million. The DRUG FREE AMBASSADORS attack the problem with colourful and informative booklets like the TRUTH ABOUT HEROIN - Flirting with the Fobidden Brings the Kiss of Death.

Spokesman Cyrus Brooks said: "the pains of heroin are great, and vastly outweigh the 'rush' people feel. Depression, nausea, loss of teeth, coma, pustules on the face and body. It's a horrible trap. We're out there to tell youth that they don't have to go that route. There is another way to achieve joy and happiness. Fun doesn't have to include drugs."

appeared in NORTHERN DAILY LEADER Thank you to the policeman and officers who have just stopped a shipment of methamphetamine (known as 'speed' or 'ice') to Australia from Jakarta. With the supply cut somewhat, now we must complement that by strenuous effort to educate youth on this drug and it's terrible effects to reduce the demand. Many don't know that speed can leed to heart attacks, stroks and death as well as depression, psychosis and long term brain damage similar to Alxheimers. There are seven stages of taking this drug, from the rush to the high to the gotta have another fix, to the crash and so forth. One gets to the point where more of the drug causes no high and intense itching, with the pychological sensation of bugs digging into your skin. It's not pretty and people on this drug for years look decades older. It's not a nice subject to talk about, but the more we confront it, the more we can do something about it. I read David Catt's article "smoking gun" 13 Feb 06 (http://www.theexpress.com.au/article/2006/02/13/92_news.html) and agree. For a while now Marijuana has been promoted as medicinal or less harmful than other drugs. But we are finding disturbing effects like connections to suicide and drug-induced psychosis. That of course leads to youth getting put away in mental institutions and possibly being given further drugs where marijuana caused it in the first place.

I've run a radio show for 2 years in Bankstown as the Drug Free Ambassadors, an initiative of the Church of Scientology, to combat this problem as well as holding events at fairs, festivals, shopping centres and so forth, throughout the area. Drug Free Ambassadors Australia Incorporated is now it's own entity and the President, Peter Mousiol, of Canterbury and other volunteer staff are committed towards helping Australia become drug free. It's a star-high goal, but worthy and starts with educating youth (and adults too), to the truth, and the idea that drug-free can be more fun, and all the emotions that one could feel while on drugs are available to you without them too. One can learn to access them. Humanitarian and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard noted wisely: "One has a choice between being dead with drugs or being alive without them. Turn the tide on drug-related deaths

Recently we have been told about how drugs effect us much more than we thought, with 664 drug-related deaths in five years coming to light and this is probably a low estimate per the coroner's court. The drugs in the report include amphetamines, ecstasy, cocaine and GHB, which are all used as "party drugs". We were also reminded of a tragic case, Stephanie Gracie, 18 years old who died from an overdose after her boyfriend injected her with speed.

More than ever drug education and prevention is needed and a group called the Drug Free Ambassadors is providing this. Though the per cent of Chinese speaking people using marijuana is less than half as the general community, seventy-six per cent felt they did not know enough about illegal drugs (ref: study by Everingham and Flaherty).

The Drug Free Ambassadors was started by the Church of Scientology and on precepts of L. Ron Hubbard such as: "One has a choice between being dead with drugs or being alive without them. Drugs rob life of the sensations and joys which are the only reasons for living anyhow."

The Drug Free Ambassadors group shows up at fairs and festivals and schools to help get out the message that a drug-free life is more fun. Participants take a 7 step pledge and get a certificate. Spokesman Cyrus Brooks said, "we've been to the Chinese speaking communities and have been very welcome because this kind information is vastly needed and wanted."

The Great Southern Land

Australia, The Great Southern Land. On this day we
celebrate everything it means to be Australian. In Parramatta
we had fire works and Australian Idol Guy Sebastian and
thousands of residents and participants.

One group, the Drug Free Ambassadors, celebrated by promoting
a drug-free lifestyle. And hundreds of youth and adults joined
in, taking a pledge against this scourge of society, and
helped pass the word on to others.

There was lots of local involvement, with one Granville teacher
asking for anti-drug booklets and a group of heavy rockers striking
a pose showing you don't have to take drugs to rock out!

This is good, but there is much work to do. In Parramatta
marijuana use or possession increased by 100% between the years
of 2000 and 2004 (Bureau of Crimes Statistics) and it is
the highest used illegal drug in Australia.

The Drug Free Ambassadors will especially target this drug and Ecstasy
this year (the use of which has increased over the country) to
stem it's use among our youth and help kids learn that "drug
free is the way to be!"

Drug Free Ambassadors Group Now Tax Exempt

AUSTRALIA, 25 January 2006 - Drug Free Ambassadors Australia Incorporated, a group dedicated to helping youth in Australia lead drug-free lives has now just been awarded tax exempt status by the Australian Taxation Office.

The Drug Free Ambassadors was started by the Church of Scientology about twelve years ago to speak to kids directly at fairs, festivals, schools and community organizations, to let them know that it is not hopeless and something can be done about the drug problem. With it's easy to follow concepts it has attracted thousands of youth to be part of it. They all swear-in on a pledge to be drug free and in turn help others.

Spokesman for the group, Cyrus Brooks said, "we're thrilled by the recognition and will continue our efforts. Just Sunday a hundred or so youth and young adults saw us in the City and joined up in the campaign to rid the country of drugs and promote to others that drugs are not the way."

New Group Forms to Fight Drugs as Police Seize Ecstasy Tablets

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: A new group has now incorporated to fight drugs. And just in time too. Drug-use reports show some drugs down, but use of ecstasy was up from 2.4 per cent to 3.4 per cent. And just last night police found more than a kilogram of ecstasy worth $100,000 on the street after a random breath test and possibly 60 grams crystal meth, a dangerous drug also called 'ice'.

Drug Free Ambassadors Australia Incorporated formed in December from the campaign of the same name run by the Church of Scientology for almost 12 years.

New Chairman and Canterbury resident, Peter Mousiol said "My aim with the Drug Free Ambassadors is to give people the data about the harmful effects of drugs so that they can do a wise decision about it and not be pushed unknowingly into a miserable existence of addiction and succumb."

And Coordinator & Public Officer and Dundas resident, Cyrus Brooks said "One is building a future where the leaders of the next generation will be drug free, not drug addicted. And now, at this time and season, we want to wish all youth (and young at heart) and Happy and drug-free New Year."

A Drug-Free New Year?

As we end the year we reflect on our achievements and our losses. We have things to celebrate and things to improve upon.

Like the Tsunami of Indonesia, where we lent a great hand and heart, to Cronulla beach where we realized that some people have yet to learn how multi-cultural we have become.

Then there was drugs, which several Australians like Lesley, Corby and Nguyen finding it an costly game to get involved in. But there is a positive side.

Our local Drug Free Ambassadors group in Sydney contacted 10s of thousands of people signing up youth on a drug-free pledge. The National Drug Strategy Household Survey says 11.3 per cent of Australians over 14 use marijuana which is down from 17.9 per cent. So we can applaud this one.

But use of ecstasy was up from 2.4 per cent to 3.4 per cent. So we still have work to do.

The Drug Free Ambassadors are an initiative by the Church of Scientology.

Anti-Drug Group Offers Solution to the Growing Crisis of Drug Abuse and Crime

Homebush West, NSW -- December 4, 2005 -- A special group of volunteers called the Drug Free Ambassadors are mounting an effort to handle what Michelle Leslie, Van Nguyen, Shapelle Corby and a host of others got caught in--the trap of drug addiction and trafficking. They met with local residents and council members explaining a better way, a drug-free life.

The group is a drug education and prevention group started by the Church of Scientology to fill a gap in the education and giving youth a hope of living drug free. Spokesman Cyrus Brooks said, "It was found that with drug education, the option of being drug free is rarely even presented, unless by some outside group that is not part of the school system. So what the Drug Free Ambassadors are is a national anti-drug prevention campaign aimed at young teens and pre-teens with the purpose of helping youth make the important decision to remain drug-free and to assist their family and friends to make the same decision. And in Homebush and around Strathfield we have had great responses. Today a young girl of 14 wanted to help in her school and with council we spoke of getting the anti-drug message all over the local government area. So we're pretty excited about this."

The Campaign is mirrored off the very successful Drug Free Marshall program which has run in the United States, South Africa and under different banners around the world, with thousands of children participating in programs run in their schools, pledging them to remain drug-free and have done so. It has created a base of youth who say "no" and do resist the temptation to "experiment" with drugs.

The belief is that a school age child can be sufficiently educated on the full dangers to their body, mind and spirit, so that they can make positive decisions about the direction of their life, regardless of peer pressure. If they are not given the needed education, then they will come across drugs at some point with no education and no information with which to make an informed decision about their future health and mental well being.

The program is simple - it begins with getting kids who are drug-free, educated and then making the decision to remain drug-free. They then publicly pledge to do so and to fight all peer pressure. It has been found from experience that once they have made a decision about this, then it is quite strong and can carry them through their teenage years.

The campaign was taken to the streets and volunteers, Drug Free Ambassadors themselves, met with thousands of youth at the markets, at the beach and on the city streets around the country, talking one-on-one with kids and parents.

There are many workable programs that get addicts off drugs without giving them more drugs in the process and plenty of drug education programs to keep our kids away from drugs. A certain portion of society don't want a drug free nation as this means loss of control of the millions of dollars in drug funding - if we solve the problem, then the research dollars are no longer needed, the drug trials are no longer needed and the kick backs stop. They have strong lobby groups who work on government staff to convince them it is all hopeless.

The Drug Free Ambassadors consider there are workable answers for everyone - we have some of them and together with like-minded groups, we already have all of them. It is our view that the current decline of today's society, with the dramatic rise in crime and illiteracy can be directly traced back to the rise in both illegal and prescriptive drugs, creating a "chemical" society. Thus it must be stopped. It is simple to do, but takes persistence.

Prime Minister Warns Youth

While the Prime Minister warns youth of drug taking and model Michelle Leslie makes her way home to Australia, youth here are having it tough with drug stats still rising.

Local stats for cannibis are increasing in the last five years per the Bureau of Crime Statistics and what that spells in terms of harm for youth is danger of depression, psychosis and suicide.

For over eleven years the Glebe volunteer group, the Drug Free Ambassadors, an initiative of the Church of Scientology, have fought this problem. They were in force at Glebe Street Fair and made some serious impact.

Thousands of people were spoken to on drugs. Spokesman Cyrus Brooks said of the day: "One person I spoke to was on drugs right at that moment and his eyes were dialated. We talked about marijuana, speed and what the dangers were and how it remained in your body. He thanked us for not judging him and took information and the website for looking up later. It's real help."

The group encountered many good stories including a former addict, Ivanka, wants to help get the word out and tell her story about how drugs harm the body and make a mess of your life. And it was actually the biggest event the Ambassadors ever had with the highest number of people signing the "drug free pledge" than ever before--770 people.

The promise states: "As a Drug-Free Ambassador, I pledge to lead the way by:
1. Leading a drug-free life.
2. Showing my friends that a drug-free life is more fun.
3. Helping my fellow drug-free ambassadors.
4. Learning more about how drugs really harm people.
5. Telling people the truth about the harmful effects of drugs.
6. Helping my family and friends to be drug-free.
7. Setting a good example to all children by leading the way to a drug-free Australia."

Ecstasy can mar people's lives

Australian model Michelle Leslie was found guilty in an Indonesian court of using drugs (Ecstasy) in Bali, but is expected to be released and home in Australia soon.

Ecstasy means "a state of elated bliss"

Elated means "in high spirits"

Bliss means "a state of extreme happiness"

I don't think it worked for Michelle. The model now has a drug charge on her record, but even more serious are the effects it has on the body, mind and spirit.
